Hipbone Sticking Out

A creative collaboration between the Pilbara community of Roebourne, and Big hART. Hipbone is told through the eyes of “The Boy” – John Pat – whose death in 1983 a Roebourne jail led to a Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody. As he lies dying in his cell, we see the story of the Pilbara region, from 1602 to the present, in a wild, theatrical mix up of time, land and culture. The design weaved together aesthetics from the maritime history of the Pilbara, European classical architecture, the spiritual and textural landscape of the Burrup Peninsula, and the present day aesthetics of industry and mining.
